The Big Six: In support of MTSS Tier 1 Whole-class Instruction

The Big Six represent the core evidence-based practices that drive effective MTSS Tier 1 whole-class instruction. High-quality instruction is built on six essential elements: Formative Assessment & Feedback, Authentic Student Engagement, Differentiation through Small-Group Instruction, Scaffolding & Interventions, Depth & Rigor, and Positive Relationships & Climate. Working together, these practices ensure that all students receive responsive, challenging, and supportive instruction before additional interventions are considered. Strong Tier 1 instruction reduces the need for supplemental intervention by addressing diverse learner needs proactively, reinforcing the principle that schools cannot successfully "intervene their way out" of weak core instruction.
