Using the WIDA Standards Framework and NJSLS to Plan for Multilingual Learners in Mathematics

Connect WIDA and NJ Math standards to support multilingual learners’ reasoning, discourse, and language development.

This workshop is designed to help administrators and educators integrate the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Mathematics. Participants explore how to align math practices with language expectations so that multilingual learners (MLs) can fully engage in mathematical reasoning and discourse. Through case studies, scaffolding strategies, and planning templates, the session emphasizes both content mastery and language growth. Administrators also examine their leadership role in creating a supportive school culture that sustains these practices.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Barriers multilingual learners face in accessing rigorous math content, including language of instruction, mathematical discourse, word problems, and contextual understanding
  • Lack of systematic scaffolds and planning to integrate language and content objectives in mathematics instruction
  • Inconsistent leadership support, resources, and professional development for teachers serving multilingual learners.

Key Learnings

  • Integrating Standards for Equity
Participants will learn to connect NJSLS math practices with WIDA language expectations, ensuring instruction emphasizes both content and language development. This equips educators to plan dual lesson objectives and anticipate the language demands of math tasks
  • Scaffolding and Planning for MLs
Educators will practice identifying barriers MLs encounter and selecting scaffolds such as word banks, sentence frames, collaborative structures, and multimodal supports. They will also use planning tools to design math lessons that embed language scaffolds and structured discourse
  • Leadership to Foster Inclusive Culture
Administrators will gain strategies to influence instruction by shaping professional development, guiding curricular choices, and implementing observation/feedback cycles. They will also explore how to strengthen school culture by promoting multilingual communication, cultural celebrations, and leadership opportunities for ML students

Underlying Needs for Stronger Family-School Partnerships

  • Barriers multilingual learners face in accessing rigorous math content, including language of instruction, mathematical discourse, word problems, and contextual understanding
  • Lack of systematic scaffolds and planning to integrate language and content objectives in mathematics instruction
  • Inconsistent leadership support, resources, and professional development for teachers serving multilingual learners.

This workshop helped me better understand the challenges families face and gave me practical strategies to strengthen communication and engagement. I now feel more confident in building supportive partnerships with families to improve student success.
