Using Data to Target Instruction: An Administrator's Guide

Participants will enhance their understanding and application of data-driven instruction by identifying available data and its uses, addressing common concerns, and learning strategies to create and utilize data-driven assessments effectively, supported by a variety of shared resources.

This workshop provides administrators with a structured and practical approach to using data to inform and improve instructional practices. Participants are guided through a framework that emphasizes the four key building blocks of data-driven instruction: assessment, analysis, action, and culture. The content supports leaders in understanding how to effectively collect, interpret, and act on student data to promote academic achievement. By the end of the session, administrators will be equipped to foster a culture of data use within their schools and to lead their teams in making informed instructional decisions.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Inconsistent or ineffective use of student data to guide instruction.

  • Misalignment between curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

  • Lack of structured systems for data analysis and follow-up action.

  • Limited administrative leadership in building a data-driven school culture.

  • Delayed or unclear communication of assessment results, leading to missed opportunities for instructional improvement.

Key Learnings

  1. Constructing and Analyzing Effective Assessments
Participants will learn to evaluate the quality of assessments, ensuring they are aligned to standards and designed to yield actionable data. They will gain strategies to interpret assessment results deeply and identify patterns, strengths, and areas needing reteaching using test-in-hand protocols and planned analysis meetings.
  2. Developing and Implementing Action Plans
The workshop trains administrators to guide teachers in creating instructional action plans based on assessment data. This includes identifying standards that need reteaching, analyzing student misconceptions, and selecting targeted strategies to improve learning outcomes. Emphasis is placed on continuous monitoring and accountability systems.
  3. Fostering a Data-Driven Culture
Leaders will explore the elements necessary to build and sustain a school culture where data use is embedded in daily practice. This involves active leadership, calendaring data routines, borrowing effective practices, and supporting ongoing professional development to create shared ownership of student success.
