This workshop provides educators with a comprehensive understanding of the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) in English Language Arts. Participants examine the assessment's format, content, question types, performance levels, and scoring rubrics, as well as the standards it measures. Emphasis is placed on practical strategies and tools that can be implemented in classrooms to better prepare students for success. 

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of familiarity among educators with NJGPA structure, item types, and performance expectations.

  • Difficulty in aligning instruction with NJGPA demands and the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.

  • Insufficient student readiness and confidence in navigating high-stakes assessments.

  • Limited use of data and resources to inform ELA instruction and intervention efforts.

Key Learnings

  1. Mastery of NJGPA Structure and Content
    Educators will gain a clear understanding of the NJGPA-ELA framework, including item types such as Evidence-Based Selected Response (EBSR), Technology-Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR), and Prose Constructed Response (PCR). They will learn how the assessment evaluates literary and informational text analysis, vocabulary usage, and writing skills aligned with state standards.

  2. Instructional Strategies for Skill Development
    Teachers will explore and practice a range of strategies to build students' reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and written expression. These strategies are designed to be easily embedded into daily instruction and formative assessments.

  3. Utilization of Assessment Resources and Tools
    Participants will learn how to access and incorporate NJGPA-related resources including digital libraries, practice tests, scoring rubrics, and released items. They will also become proficient in leveraging online testing tools to familiarize students with the test platform and ensure they can independently navigate it during testing.
