Stages of Student Engagement

Schlechty' s Model - Schlechty conceptualizes student engagement as a continuum ranging from disengagement to high commitment. The stages include rebellion and retreatism, where students resist or withdraw from learning; ritual compliance, in which students comply without genuine investment; strategic compliance, where students work for external rewards; and authentic engagement, where students are deeply motivated by the task itself. Authentic engagement occurs when students find the work meaningful, challenging, and aligned with their interests and values (Schlechty, 2002).
