Closing the Literacy Gap in Secondary Schools

Strengthening Literacy in Middle and High School focuses on accelerating reading and writing growth through age-respectful, evidence-based practices. Instruction emphasizes foundational skills such as decoding, fluency, and morphology while using materials appropriate for older students. Vocabulary and background knowledge are intentionally built through Tier 2 and Tier 3 word instruction, content-rich texts, and purposeful read-alouds with discussion. Students engage with complex, grade-level texts through scaffolding, close reading, and text-dependent questions.
