The Science of Reading: Cracking the Code

Participants will walk away with an understanding of the differences between balanced literacy and structured literacy and learn how to incorporate elements of structured literacy into their classrooms.

This workshop introduces educators to the foundational principles of the Science of Reading, focusing on how children learn to decode written language. Participants examine evidence-based instructional practices that align with cognitive science, including phonemic awareness, phonics, and structured literacy routines. Through practical strategies and hands-on resources, the session supports educators in helping students become fluent, independent readers. Emphasis is placed on systematic instruction and early intervention to prevent reading difficulties.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Inconsistent application of evidence-based reading practices in early grades

  • Student struggles with decoding and fluency

  • Limited teacher knowledge of how cognitive science informs literacy development

  • Gaps in foundational reading skills that lead to long-term academic challenges

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding the Science of Reading Framework
Participants will explore the cognitive processes involved in learning to read and understand the importance of aligning instruction with research-based practices.

  2. Implementing Structured Literacy
Educators will gain strategies for planning and delivering explicit, sequential instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding.

  3. Diagnosing and Addressing Reading Gaps
Teachers will learn how to identify signs of reading difficulty early and apply targeted supports to promote student success in foundational literacy.
