Understanding and Unpacking the Mathematics NJSLS

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics across various grade levels, including significant changes, and assess the implications for teaching and evaluation methods.

This workshop equips educators with a deep understanding of the revised New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Mathematics (NJSLS-M). Participants will explore the major shifts in the standards, including new mandates and expanded requirements such as climate change integration and data literacy. Through hands-on unpacking protocols, collaborative discussions, and analysis of instructional implications, educators will gain clarity on how these changes will impact classroom instruction across grade levels. The session also supports curriculum planning by addressing challenges, uncovering new opportunities, and aligning instruction with state mandates.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Uncertainty about how to implement mandates like climate change education and data literacy.

  • Difficulty in interpreting domain structures and terminology
  • Need for actionable strategies to align instruction and curriculum with standards.

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding Key Shifts in the Standards
Participants will learn to identify and interpret the key elements of the NJSLS-M, including domain structures, the emphasis on "accuracy and efficiency" over "fluency," and foundational work in radicals and data analysis across grade bands.

  2. Strategies for Standards Unpacking and Curriculum Alignment
Educators will gain skills in unpacking standards using a structured protocol, enabling them to break down complex standards into student-friendly learning goals. This process aids in designing instructional activities and assessments that align with updated expectations.

  3. Incorporating Mandates and 21st Century Themes
Teachers will develop strategies for integrating mandated content and interdisciplinary themes. They will also explore how to reflect these themes in lesson planning and daily instruction using authentic, age-appropriate contexts.
