Train the Brain: Improving Study Skills and Executive Functioning at Home

Participants will explore 8 key executive functions and how they affect their child's efficiency inside the household, classroom, and beyond.

This workshop is designed to equip families with practical strategies to strengthen their child’s executive functioning and study skills outside of the classroom. Through a breakdown of eight essential executive functioning skills, participants gain insight into how these abilities impact academic performance and behavior. The session offers parents tools to identify their child’s strengths and areas of need and shares accessible strategies and resources for building these skills through structured routines, effective study habits, and emotional regulation practices. Emphasis is placed on fostering independence, goal-setting, and self-control to support lifelong learning and success.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Difficulty starting and completing homework or long-term projects

  • Poor organization of materials and time

  • Weak memory retention and inability to recall information

  • Challenges with self-control, impulse regulation, and emotional management

  • Limited parental tools for supporting executive functioning at home

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding and Targeting Executive Function Skills
    Participants will learn to recognize the eight core executive functioning skills and identify how deficits in these areas affect students academically and behaviorally. They will gain the ability to assess their child’s needs using parent and student questionnaires to inform tailored support strategies.

  2. Implementing Home-Based Strategies for Skill Development
    The workshop offers specific routines and tools for improving homework completion, organization, and long-term planning. Parents will be introduced to methods to reinforce study habits in a structured home environment.

  3. Building Emotional Regulation and Problem-Solving Abilities
    Participants will explore techniques for helping children manage frustration and impulsivity through mindful breathing, positive affirmations, and proactive planning. Additionally, they will be shown how to guide children through a structured problem-solving process to increase resilience and independence.
