Step by Step: Mastering the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model

Participants will be prepared to design and implement lessons aligned with the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, apply effective scaffolding strategies to support student progress, and cultivate a classroom culture that promotes independence and confidence.

This workshop introduces educators to the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional framework, aimed at gradually shifting cognitive load from teachers to students. Participants learn about the structured phases of the GRR Model—"I DO" (Teacher Modeling), "WE DO" (Guided Practice), and "YOU DO" (Collaborative and Independent Learning). Emphasizing active student participation and independence, the workshop illustrates how teachers can effectively scaffold lessons, fostering critical thinking and metacognitive skills. Practical demonstrations, videos, and interactive activities guide educators through implementing GRR effectively in diverse classroom contexts.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Over-reliance on direct instruction without sufficient student independence.

  • Lack of structured opportunities for students to independently apply skills.

  • Inadequate scaffolding to support diverse student learning needs.

Key Learnings

  1. Effective Implementation of GRR Phases: Participants will understand how to clearly structure and differentiate the "I DO," "WE DO," and "YOU DO" phases, ensuring appropriate cognitive load transfer from teacher to student.

  2. Interactive Modeling Strategies: Educators will learn specific strategies for interactive modeling, including using think-alouds to enhance student engagement and comprehension of complex processes.

  3. Scaffolding and Collaboration Techniques: Attendees will acquire methods to effectively scaffold instruction and facilitate collaborative learning environments that foster student independence, critical thinking, and peer-to-peer learning.
