Modeling in Mathematics

Participants will gain comprehensive understanding of how to effectively incorporate instructional strategies and models aligned with the Standards in Mathematics, supported by hands-on demonstrations and access to templates for implementing student-centered activities in their classrooms.

This workshop is designed to help teachers strengthen their ability to incorporate mathematical modeling into classroom instruction. Participants will explore how modeling connects abstract mathematical concepts to real-world applications, making learning more meaningful and engaging for students. The session emphasizes strategies for designing tasks that integrate modeling across grade levels and mathematical domains. Teachers will gain hands-on experience in creating lessons that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning through authentic contexts.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of student opportunities to apply mathematics in real-world, authentic situations

  • Challenges in designing standards-aligned tasks that balance conceptual understanding, fluency, and application

  • Limited strategies for guiding students to think critically and communicate their reasoning during modeling activities

Key Learnings

Designing and Implementing Modeling Tasks

Teachers will learn to create developmentally appropriate modeling activities that align with standards and promote meaningful connections between math concepts and real-life problems.

Supporting Mathematical Reasoning and Communication

Participants will gain strategies to facilitate student discussions, encourage justification of solutions, and guide students in explaining their modeling processes.

Integrating Modeling Across Grade Levels

Educators will explore how to scaffold and adapt modeling activities across grade bands, ensuring accessibility for all learners and progression of skills.

Core Needs Addressed

Underlying Needs for Stronger Family-School Partnerships

  • Lack of student opportunities to apply mathematics in real-world, authentic situations

  • Challenges in designing standards-aligned tasks that balance conceptual understanding, fluency, and application

  • Limited strategies for guiding students to think critically and communicate their reasoning during modeling activities

This workshop helped me better understand the challenges families face and gave me practical strategies to strengthen communication and engagement. I now feel more confident in building supportive partnerships with families to improve student success.
