Launching Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports with Purpose

This workshop equips administrators with the knowledge and tools needed to launch a successful schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. Participants will explore the core components of PBIS, including establishing clear behavior expectations, developing data-driven systems for monitoring progress, and building staff buy-in through consistent communication and support. The session highlights strategies for creating a positive, equitable school climate and sustaining implementation over time.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of common language and expectations for student behavior
  • Inconsistent and inequitable behavior response systems
  • A “gotcha” mentality dominates school climate  - Reactive vs. proactive approach to behavior and school climate

Key Learnings

  • Understanding the PBIS Core Framework: Participants will define PBIS as a proactive, multi-tiered approach to supporting behavior and academics. The three tiers of MTSS will be addressed: Tier 1—universal supports; Tier 2—targeted interventions; and Tier 3—intensive, individualized supports. Discussion will include how PBIS improves climate, consistency, and equity.

  • Laying the PBIS Groundwork: Educators will develop the essential components of PBIS, including: (1) PBIS team, (2) behavior expectations, (3) teaching expectations, (4) reinforcement systems, and (5) response protocols.

  • Using Data Effectively: The workshop equips educators with techniques to use data to guide decisions—not just track discipline—drawing from common data sources such as Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs), attendance, and SEL surveys. Discussion will include key progress metrics such as reductions in referrals, increased attendance, and improved staff climate surveys.
