Integrating NJSLA into Daily Instruction for Math

Participants will gain the concepts and materials needed to integrate test preparation into daily instruction, implement NJSLA resources and rubrics, construct NJSLA-like items and “Do Nows,” and leave with a variety of ideas and activities to use immediately in their classrooms.

This workshop equips math teachers in grades 3 through high school with practical strategies to incorporate New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) expectations into their everyday teaching. Participants explore the alignment between formative and summative assessments and the NJSLA, and practice using assessment-aligned tasks to support student learning. The session emphasizes types of NJSLA items, use of tools, and student-centered instructional strategies. By weaving state assessment formats into regular instruction, teachers can increase student familiarity and comfort with NJSLA-style tasks while maintaining instructional integrity.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of student familiarity with NJSLA-style questions and formats

  • Difficulty in integrating assessment-aligned tasks into daily math instruction

  • Misalignment between classroom tasks and the rigor or style of state assessments

  • Need for effective formative and summative assessment strategies

Key Learnings

  1. Task Integration and Alignment
Participants will learn how to design and integrate tasks that mirror the NJSLA item types (Type I, II, III) into daily lessons to build assessment readiness without sacrificing curriculum goals.

  2. Instructional Strategies to Support Diverse Learners
Educators will explore and apply a variety of student engagement and differentiation techniques that reinforce standards and provide equitable access to high-level math tasks.

  3. Effective Use of Formative and Summative Assessments
Teachers will develop the ability to utilize both formative tools and summative measures to monitor student progress and inform instruction in ways that reflect NJSLA rigor and format.
