Innovative Assessment Practices for Specialists

Participants will enhance their understanding and utilization of alternative assessments across diverse subjects, culminating in the creation and presentation of their own assessment products.

This workshop equips specialist teachers—such as those in physical education, art, music, and world languages—with tools and strategies to expand their assessment repertoires. Participants begin with an overview of alternative assessments and the rationale for their use in diverse subject areas. Through interactive exploration, educators engage with a variety of innovative assessment methods that provide more authentic, learner-centered ways to measure student growth. The session culminates in each participant designing and presenting their own assessment product tailored to their classroom context.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Overreliance on traditional assessments that may not capture student creativity, skill application, or performance in specialist subjects.

  • Limited assessment strategies that fail to reflect the diverse needs of learners in non-core academic areas.

  • Lack of opportunities for specialists to design and implement authentic, discipline-appropriate assessments.
