Aligning Practices with the Social Studies NJSLS

Educators apply aligning instruction with the NJSLS for Social Studies (NJSLS-SS) in daily instruction.

This workshop is designed to support educators in effectively aligning their instruction with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Social Studies (NJSLS-SS). Participants explore the framework, core ideas, disciplinary concepts, and historical eras included across grade levels K–12. The session includes engagement in sample classroom activities, guided discussions around new requirements, and collaborative planning for implementation. Resources are shared to help educators integrate mandated topics.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Uncertainty about how to integrate required topics into instruction.

  • Need for actionable classroom strategies that reflect the revised standards.

  • Insufficient alignment between existing teaching practices and the updated state expectations.

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding Core Ideas and Historical Eras by Grade Band
Participants will gain clarity on the required core disciplinary concepts in Civics, Geography, Economics, and History for each grade band, as well as the specific historical eras that must be covered. This understanding equips educators to structure curriculum and instruction to meet the progression of learning standards.

  2. Strategies for Standards-Based Instructional Design
Educators will learn how to use engaging sample activities that promote student inquiry, civic participation, and critical thinking aligned with the NJSLS-SS. These strategies ensure students are active participants in their learning and deepen their understanding of historical and contemporary issues.

  3. Incorporating Mandated Cross-Curricular Themes
Participants will discover practical ways to integrate state-required instructional topics, as well as SEL and climate change education. They will receive guidance and resources to meet legal mandates while fostering inclusive and responsible citizenship in their students.

Designed for School Leaders asking...

How can we ensure Social Studies instruction aligned to the NJSLS-SS leads to measurable growth in students’ civic literacy, historical thinking, and disciplinary reasoning skills?

What systems will support consistent implementation of core ideas, disciplinary concepts, and mandated topics so students demonstrate deeper understanding across grade levels?

How do we align curriculum, instruction, and performance tasks in Social Studies to strengthen critical analysis, evidence-based argumentation, and real-world application?

This workshop helped me better understand the challenges families face and gave me practical strategies to strengthen communication and engagement. I now feel more confident in building supportive partnerships with families to improve student success.
