Aligning Practices with the Social Studies NJSLS

Participants will delve into the Social Studies NJSLS, identifying applications for their curriculum, engaging in hands-on activities for classroom implementation, and receiving resources to align their practice with the standards.

This workshop is designed to support educators in effectively aligning their instruction with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Social Studies (NJSLS-SS). Participants explore the framework, core ideas, disciplinary concepts, and historical eras included across grade levels K–12. The session includes engagement in sample classroom activities, guided discussions around new requirements, and collaborative planning for implementation. Resources are shared to help educators integrate mandated topics.

  1. Understanding Core Ideas and Historical Eras by Grade Band
    Participants will gain clarity on the required core disciplinary concepts in Civics, Geography, Economics, and History for each grade band, as well as the specific historical eras that must be covered. This understanding equips educators to structure curriculum and instruction to meet the progression of learning standards.

  2. Strategies for Standards-Based Instructional Design
    Educators will learn how to use engaging sample activities that promote student inquiry, civic participation, and critical thinking aligned with the NJSLS-SS. These strategies ensure students are active participants in their learning and deepen their understanding of historical and contemporary issues.

  3. Incorporating Mandated Cross-Curricular Themes
    Participants will discover practical ways to integrate state-required instructional topics, as well as SEL and climate change education. They will receive guidance and resources to meet legal mandates while fostering inclusive and responsible citizenship in their students.
