Aligning Practices with the NJSLS for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education

Participants will leave the workshop equipped with practical strategies and resources to effectively integrate the NJSLS for Physical Education and Health into their curriculum and classrooms.

This workshop equips K-12 educators with the knowledge and tools to align their health and physical education instruction with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. Participants review the NJSLS framework, engage in sample learning activities, and explore curriculum requirements and resources for effective classroom implementation. Through hands-on experiences and strategic planning, teachers gain insights into integrating standards-aligned practices across developmental stages.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of familiarity or confidence in applying the NJSLS for Health and PE.

  • Difficulty in developing age-appropriate, standards-aligned activities across grade bands.

  • Limited access to practical resources and instructional strategies that integrate mandated topics.

  • Inconsistent understanding of how to include global and societal issues, like climate change, in health and PE instruction.

Key Learnings

  1. Deep Understanding of NJSLS-CHPE Framework and Core Ideas
Educators will learn to unpack and interpret the NJSLS standards across the three main strands—Personal and Mental Health (2.1), Physical Wellness (2.2), and Safety (2.3)—to inform instructional planning and ensure grade-level appropriateness from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

  2. Strategies for Standards-Based Curriculum Implementation
Participants will explore and model sample activities tailored to various grade levels, which promote student engagement and align directly with required performance expectations, including those related to emotional health, community safety, and substance use prevention.

  3. Integration of Interdisciplinary and Legislative Topics
Teachers will gain practical strategies to integrate cross-cutting themes and mandated laws into health and PE lessons, ensuring comprehensive and socially relevant instruction.
