Transforming Student Writing Part 1: Practical Strategies for Educators

Build thinking and content mastery with explicit, sentence‑level writing instruction grounded in The Writing Revolution.

In this workshop, participants will delve into the foundational principles of The Writing Revolution 2.0, focusing on how explicit writing instruction can be a catalyst for deepening student thinking across content areas. Educators will explore the six core principles of the Hochman Method, examining how sentence-level instruction builds a scaffold for more complex writing tasks. Through interactive discussion, video exemplars, and hands-on activities, teachers will reflect on how these strategies apply to their own classrooms, with special emphasis on how writing improves comprehension, critical thinking, and content mastery.

‍

Core Needs Addressed

  • Students lacking explicit foundational writing instruction in early grades, leading to struggles in secondary education.
  • Assumptions that older students have already mastered writing basics, despite evidence to the contrary.
  • Pressure to produce extended writing before mastering sentence-level skills.
  • Inconsistent integration of writing into non-ELA content areas.

‍

Key Learnings

  • ‍Explicit Instruction and Foundational Skills – Participants will learn how to directly teach writing skills starting in the early grades, with an emphasis on sentence construction, grammar in context, and scaffolding techniques for all learners.
  • Curriculum-Embedded Writing Strategies – Educators will gain strategies to incorporate writing into all subject areas, using tools like sentence stems, “Because, But, So” prompts, and content-specific writing tasks to deepen understanding.
  • ‍Process-Oriented Writing Development – Teachers will understand the importance of guiding students through the planning and revising phases, using structured supports to help organize ideas, refine drafts, and improve clarity and coherence.
