Student Engagement in Mathematics, Part 1: Problem Solving and Math Stations

Participants will gain knowledge and skills in enhancing student engagement and numeracy through diverse strategies (i.e. graphic organizers and math stations) as well as resources to implement these strategies effectively in their classrooms.

This workshop equips educators with practical strategies to increase student engagement in math through the use of structured problem-solving routines and interactive math stations. Grounded in the Framework for Engagement in Mathematics, it explores how to activate cognitive, operative, and affective engagement in a supportive classroom environment. Teachers examine tools like Pólya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving Process, anchor charts, task cards, and fluency boards. The session also demonstrates how to implement differentiated math centers and small group instruction that support student talk, reasoning, and confidence.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Low student motivation or participation during math instruction

  • Over-reliance on direct instruction without active student processing

  • Lack of differentiation and student voice in math problem-solving

  • Limited use of manipulatives and multiple representations for conceptual understanding

Key Learnings

  1. Implementing a Structured Problem-Solving Framework
Teachers will learn how to use Pólya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving Process along with graphic organizers, anchor charts, and visual tools to support students’ math thinking and reflection.

  2. Designing Engaging Math Stations for Differentiation and Fluency
Participants will explore how to build and manage math stations—including computation boards, comparison tasks, fluency games, and virtual manipulatives—that provide reinforcement and challenge tailored to various skill levels.

  3. Encouraging Math Conversations and Collaboration
Educators will develop strategies to increase student discourse and reasoning, such as math interviews, collaborative problem-solving, and small group activities that promote engagement through peer interaction and shared strategies.
