Science of Reading for Coaches Program

What is the best approach to teach reading? This question has existed for many years and has been highly debated.

What is the best approach to teach reading? This question has existed for many years and has been highly debated. Decades worth of research in fields including cognitive science, referred to as the Science of Reading, point to effective strategies for teaching kids how to read. This program dives into that research and makes connections for coaches as to what the science of reading is, what evidence-based practices look like in teachers' classrooms, and how coaches can support their K-2 teachers. Participants will explore the differences between phonological and phonemic awareness, learn decoding strategies, sight recognition strategies and orthographic mapping, and engage in activities that can easily be implemented during coaching sessions. Participants will learn how to best support teachers throughout the year with classroom visits, PLC topics, and assessments. Unlike traditional one day workshops, this program includes a mix of asynchronous work, monthly synchronous workshops, coaching, and office hours for ongoing and individualized support.
