Investigating Research-Based Intervention in the Classroom: MTSS Approach to Academics and Behavior

Participants will gain confidence and competence in tiered interventions to support at-risk students, exploring multiple intervention levels, progress monitoring, and data-based decision making, while applying concepts through case studies, video clips, and tiered activities.

This workshop provides a comprehensive exploration of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), an educational framework designed to meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of all students. Participants will engage in learning about the three-tiered model of support and how to implement it with fidelity using data-driven practices. The session covers universal screening, evidence-based interventions, and progress monitoring, while emphasizing the integration of academic and behavioral strategies at each tier. Teachers will leave with practical tools and techniques to support all learners, especially those requiring targeted or intensive interventions.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of differentiated support for struggling learners

  • Over-reliance on special education referrals without prior intervention

  • Inconsistent implementation of behavior and academic supports

  • Need for data-informed decision making in classrooms

  • Insufficient student ownership and engagement in learning

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding and Implementing the MTSS Framework
Participants will gain a clear understanding of the MTSS model, including the structure and purpose of Tier 1 (universal), Tier 2 (targeted), and Tier 3 (intensive) interventions. They will learn how to distinguish the components and supports at each level and how to apply them effectively in academic and behavioral contexts.

  2. Data-Driven Intervention and Progress Monitoring
Educators will learn how to utilize tools such as curriculum-based measurements (CBM), standardized assessments, and behavioral tracking to identify students in need, measure growth, and adapt instruction. The workshop demonstrates how progress monitoring differs from general teaching by emphasizing systematic data collection and responsive instructional adjustments.

  3. Strategies for Integrating Academics and Behavior Supports
Participants will be equipped with practical classroom strategies such as differentiated instruction, metacognitive skill development, social-emotional learning groups, individualized behavior plans, and goal setting. These strategies are tailored for each tier and designed to increase engagement, self-awareness, and achievement for all students.
