Preparing Students for Type I Items in Mathematics

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of Type I items in mathematics, reviewing grade-level Standards, and accessing activities and resources tailored to various grade-level configurations to enhance application and fluency in their classrooms.

This workshop is designed to equip educators with strategies and tools to effectively prepare students for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA), specifically focusing on Type I items in mathematics. Participants will explore shifts in math instruction (focus, coherence, rigor), learn how to leverage NJSLA evidence statements, and examine practice tests and item structures. The training emphasizes the integration of technology-enhanced question types and the importance of mathematical vocabulary, precision, and modeling.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of familiarity with the structure and expectations of NJSLA Type I items

  • Insufficient integration of evidence statements and math practices in daily instruction

  • Gaps in students’ readiness for technology-enhanced item types and vocabulary precision

Key Learnings

  1. Effective Use of Evidence Statements: Participants will learn how to analyze and apply NJSLA evidence statements to inform lesson planning and assessment alignment.

  2. Item Structure and Strategy Development: Educators will develop skills to deconstruct and model a range of Type I item styles such as multiple select, drag-and-drop, drop-down, and constructed response using digital tools.

  3. Vocabulary and Technology Integration: Teachers will gain strategies to help students navigate assessment language and technology, including interpreting directions, engaging with embedded vocabulary, and practicing with digital item formats to enhance mathematical precision and discourse.
