Integrating the NJSLS for Math and ELA into Science Curriculum and Instruction

Participants will explore the intersection of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts and math with science curriculum and instruction, unpacking key science-related standards, examining grade level-specific constructs, and considering instructional and assessment implications, while receiving strategies and resources for effective implementation.

This workshop is designed to help educators understand and implement the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Math and English Language Arts (ELA) within science instruction. Participants explore the NJSLS and examine interdisciplinary strategies for integrating ELA and Math into science classrooms. Through sample activities and curriculum alignment practices, educators are guided to bridge content areas meaningfully and effectively.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of clarity and alignment between ELA/Math standards and current science instruction.

  • Difficulty in applying interdisciplinary standards in meaningful ways within science curricula.

  • Insufficient strategies for integrating real-world, data-driven, and multimodal approaches to enhance literacy and numeracy in science education.

Key Learnings

  1. Strategic Integration of Revised Standards
Participants will gain the ability to identify and apply the NJSLS for ELA and Math, with particular attention to coding structures, foundational skills, and thematic elements within the context of science curriculum and instruction.

  2. Interdisciplinary Instructional Design
Educators will learn how to design and implement interdisciplinary lessons that connect science concepts with ELA and Math skills. This includes strategies like annotation, argumentative writing (C-E-R framework), vocabulary development, and data analysis using authentic sources.

  3. Project-Based Learning (PBL) for Real-World Application
Attendees will explore how to employ project-based learning models that require students to tackle complex, real-world problems. They will understand how to guide students in developing solutions, managing research, and presenting their findings, fostering critical thinking and collaboration.

Core Needs Addressed

Underlying Needs for Stronger Family-School Partnerships

  • Lack of clarity and alignment between ELA/Math standards and current science instruction.

  • Difficulty in applying interdisciplinary standards in meaningful ways within science curricula.

  • Insufficient strategies for integrating real-world, data-driven, and multimodal approaches to enhance literacy and numeracy in science education.

This workshop helped me better understand the challenges families face and gave me practical strategies to strengthen communication and engagement. I now feel more confident in building supportive partnerships with families to improve student success.
