This workshop is designed to help K–12 math educators understand and effectively implement the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Mathematics. Participants explore the major elements of the standards, such as fluency expectations, data literacy components, and the integration of climate change themes across grade levels. The session features hands-on engagement with model activities, guidance on creating interdisciplinary lessons, and resources that support compliance with educational mandates.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of alignment between current teaching practices and NJSLS math standards.

  • Inadequate incorporation of interdisciplinary themes like climate change, diversity, and inclusion in math instruction.

  • Challenges with integrating historical and real-world contexts into mathematics lessons.

Key Learnings

  1. Understanding and Applying the Major Elements of the Math NJSLS
Participants will analyze the critical elements of the standards, the structure of domains, and the integration of real-world applications including climate change and authentic data sets.

  2. Designing Standards-Aligned and Interdisciplinary Math Lessons
Educators will engage in the creation and adaptation of lesson plans that address the new standards while incorporating cross-curricular themes. This includes the use of NJSLA-style question formats and interdisciplinary resources for enhanced student engagement.

  3. Accessing and Utilizing Resources for Inclusive and Legal Compliance
Teachers will explore resources that support the inclusion of state-mandated content such as the Amistad and Holocaust mandates, as well as diversity and inclusion laws. They will learn to incorporate these elements through grade-specific reading materials, data analysis activities, and collaborative classroom discussions.
