Supporting Rigor in the Classroom

Participants will deepen their understanding of the three components of rigor–environment, instruction, and demonstrated learning—through the lens of teaching frameworks, hands-on activities, and classroom video analysis, culminating in actionable planning for immediate application in their classrooms.

This workshop aims to empower educators by developing their understanding and implementation of classroom rigor. Participants learn to create a rigorous learning environment aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK). The content emphasizes strategies for setting high expectations, fostering growth mindsets, and ensuring student engagement through differentiated instruction and productive feedback. Additionally, teachers explore methods for improving questioning techniques and scaffolding instructions, all designed to support students in demonstrating high-level learning.

Core Needs Addressed

  • Lack of clarity around what constitutes rigor in education.

  • Insufficient strategies for differentiating instruction to meet varied student needs.

  • Challenges in effectively assessing and demonstrating student mastery at higher cognitive levels.

Key Learnings

  1. Integration of Cognitive Frameworks: Participants will be skilled in applying Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) to enhance instructional rigor and align assessments with learning goals.

  2. Creating a Rigorous Learning Environment: Educators will learn strategies to set high expectations, cultivate a growth mindset among students, and consistently reinforce core classroom values to foster rigorous academic engagement.

  3. Effective Instructional Techniques: Teachers will acquire practical skills in articulating clear learning objectives, providing constructive and actionable feedback, improving question quality and classroom discussions, and effectively scaffolding instruction to support deeper student understanding and demonstration of learning.
