This workshop was created to support districts as they take steps to meet the State of New Jersey’s Algebra 1 graduation requirements. Algebra requires extensive abstract thinking and moves students beyond an emphasis on arithmetic operations to focus on understanding the process by which one arrives at an answer. In order to be successful on the Algebra 1 NJSLA, students need to be proficient with multiple representations, have the ability to reason logically, and apply the math in context. During this workshop, participants will have an opportunity to dig deeper into the major Algebra 1 Standards, focusing on teaching concepts in connection rather than in isolation. Next, the participants will explore lessons and engage in student-centered activities that integrate multiple Algebra topics. Finally, participants will learn strategies, using samples of NJSLA’s Type I, II and III items, to provide logical Standards-based instruction while preparing students to meet expectations on the Algebra 1 NJSLA Assessment.
