Making Meaning: Research-Based Strategies for Vocabulary Instruction

The importance of vocabulary instruction has been elevated in the years since the Common Core Standards were introduced.

The importance of vocabulary instruction has been elevated in the years since the Common Core Standards were introduced. Research has proven the importance of direct instruction for student’s to grow their word knowledge, however there are multiple components to a robust vocabulary program. This workshop will explore a framework that includes:

(a) providing rich and varied language experiences,

(b) teaching individual words,

(c) teaching word-learning strategies, and

(d) developing word consciousness.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities as learners and will leave with instructional routines and strategies that can be woven into their current curriculum and instruction.
